Key Endorsement Boosts Rep. Jim Jordan’s Bid for House Speaker Amid GOP Unity Push

House Judiciary Committee Chairman, Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, received a critical endorsement from House Armed Services Committee Chairman, Mike Rogers, R-Ala., marking a significant stride in his pursuit of the speaker’s gavel. This endorsement, announced on Monday via a tweet by Rogers, comes as a considerable win for Jordan, given Rogers’ earlier staunch opposition.

According to a report from Fox News, Rogers had previously been vocal about his resistance to supporting Jordan for the speaker role. However, a shift occurred after two detailed discussions between the two lawmakers over the weekend concerning the upcoming vote and House GOP priorities. “[Jordan] and I have had two cordial, thoughtful, and productive conversations over the past two days,” Rogers conveyed in his tweet, elaborating on their agreement regarding the necessity for Congress to pass substantial legislation including a robust National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), appropriations for government funding, and the Farm Bill.

Following their discussions, Rogers reversed his stance, stating, “I have decided to support Jim Jordan for Speaker of the House on the floor.” This newfound support underscores Rogers’ team player ethos within the Republican majority, aimed at combating what he termed as President Joe Biden’s “reckless agenda for America.”

In a tweet, Jordan expressed gratitude for Rogers’ support, emphasizing the importance of unity within the Republican Conference to effectively counter the current administration’s agenda.

The endorsement comes on the heels of Jordan securing his party’s speaker nomination last Friday, overcoming a challenge from Georgia GOP Rep. Austin Scott. Although the initial vote revealed some divisions within the party, with 55 votes against Jordan in a second secret ballot, Rogers’ flip could signal a broader moderate backing for the Ohio representative.

House Republicans reconvened on Capitol Hill for a conference meeting on Monday night, with Jordan pushing for a speaker floor vote on Tuesday. The newfound support from a key figure like Rogers may indeed galvanize further endorsements, bolstering Jordan’s bid as the next Speaker of the House.
