How Thomas Massie Stood Up to Special Interest and Voted To Put America First

On October 30th, 2023 Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie was attacked by one of the largest special interest groups in America for a vote that he placed on October 25th, 2023. The post on the social media network X stated “Instead of supporting Israel, Representative Thomas Massie voted with, AOC, Rashida Tlaib, Illhan Omar, Jamal Bowman and Summer Lee. Massie and the squad opposed supporting Israel and opposed condemning Hamas.”

Representative Massie quickly took to the social media platform to explain his logic for his vote on HR771. Massie’s response was very logical:

“I condemn the barbaric attack on Israel and I affirm Israel’s right to defend itself. However, I will not be voting for House Resolution 771 today because: 1) It calls for sanctions on a sovereign country. Sanctions are a prelude to war and hurt the citizens of the country more than the government of the country that’s being sanctioned. And ultimately, sanctions create laws that will be used to prosecute American citizens (who engage in trade), not citizens of the sanctioned country. In short, sanctions do not achieve their stated purposes but do breed resentment of our country abroad. 2) It asserts the necessity of foreign aid commitments which I have voted against. Our country is going bankrupt and we can’t afford to borrow money to send overseas, yet this resolution states that we should. 3) It contains an open-ended promise of military support that is so broad that it could be interpreted to commit US soldiers to the conflict. US troops should not be engaged in this conflict. 4) It tends to broaden the conflict to other countries when it would be better to keep the war contained geographically.”

Most Americans outside of those who have worked on political campaigns have never heard of AIPAC, (which stands for American Israel Public Affairs Committee).  The reality of AIPAC is that they are a major player in campaign funding. According to financial transparency site open secrets, AIPAC contributed over 1,400,000 to Congressional candidates in the 2022 election cycle alone.

Despite the criticism directed toward Representative Massie for voting with Democrats, their donation strategy reflects a different stance when their own money is involved with $663,925 going toward Republican candidates while $766,159 was spent on Democrat candidates.

The largest donation made in 2022 was the staggering sum of 10,500,000 to the Democracy Project. The American Democracy Project states that they provide a “swift political response to anti-Israel candidates”.

It would appear by their own definition that Representative Massie has placed himself firmly in the crosshairs of these powerful groups simply by voting not to fund foreign interests just as he has done his entire career. In my opinion, Massie’s vote was not anti-Israel but it was Pro-America. Massie stated on 11/5 that lobbyist for Israel would be running television hit pieces against him over his stance. Why are lobbyist for foreign interests allowed to directly influence American elections?

Political campaigns are a game of money, and working against special interest groups can be daunting. The notoriously Anti-Trump group The Lincoln Project is also listed among the donations made by AIPAC. They will fund anything that is against putting America First and attack anything that does put America First. It is crucial that American voters support those who stand for America First and put aside the noise of dark money.

As of the time of writing this article, the national debt is nearing 34 trillion dollars. Any elected official raiding America’s coffers to fund foreign interests must be removed and those showing restraint and fiscal responsibility must be rewarded.  Putting America first is more than a catchy tagline, for the 435 elected members of congress it must be a mantra with every vote.  For Thomas Massie, it most certainly was.
