Petersen: The Violent Attack on a Child in Grand Central Station Symbolizes a Far More Sinister System

by | Apr 17, 2024 | Opinion

What kind of society allows a child to be attacked without swift and severe consequences? It is clear we are living in a depraved era where criminals feel emboldened and citizens are left vulnerable. This past Sunday, Jean Carlos Zarzuela brutally attacked a 9-year-old girl in Grand Central Terminal, an incident that left her dizzy and in pain. This vile act of violence was not an isolated incident but a symptom of a much larger, more sinister problem: our failing criminal justice system.

Let’s talk facts. The criminal who committed this heinous act was previously arrested for attacking an elderly woman on April 4, and yet, thanks to Manhattan’s soft-on-crime Judge Laurie Peterson, Zarzuela was released without bail. Judge Peterson, whose track record includes numerous decisions to release violent offenders, put him right back on the streets. It’s as if the safety of the public is of no concern to her or the liberal politicians backing these soft-on-crime policies.

Look at the statistics — cities with lenient bail policies and weak criminal justice approaches are experiencing surges in crime rates. Violent criminals walk free, emboldened by a system that barely slaps their wrists. This is not just incompetence; it is a willful disregard for the safety and well-being of law-abiding citizens. The leadership, including New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, is turning New York into a paradise for criminals at the expense of everyone else. Heastie’s opposition to even modest fixes to the disastrous no-bail law, alongside his absurd claim that “raising penalties is never a deterrent on crime,” showcases a dangerous detachment from reality.

The consequences of such leadership are dire: not only are innocent children and elderly citizens at risk, but our very law enforcement officers are being put in grave danger. Recently, two police officers were tragically killed near Syracuse, a grim reminder of the stakes at play.

The moral decay and rising chaos underpinning such governance must be confronted head-on. The assault on a 9-year-old girl should be a wake-up call, but if history is any indication, it won’t be enough to spur action from our current leaders. This is why, this fall, we must take a stand. It is imperative that we vote against Joe Biden and his party’s dangerous leniency towards criminal behavior. We need to restore law and order by bringing back strong leadership like Donald Trump, who has consistently championed tough-on-crime policies.

Only then can we hope to reclaim our streets and safeguard our future. If we fail to act, the decay will only spread, and the consequences will be borne by every law-abiding citizen. The choice is clear this November: vote for safety, vote for security, vote for Trump.
