President Joe Biden Comments on Pay in Women’s Sports after Caitlin Clark’s Contract Details Came to Light

Former Iowa Hawkeyes superstar Caitlin Clark was drafted with the No. 1 pick by the Indiana Fever less than a week ago, but is estimated to make just $76,535 in her first season and approximately $338,000 over four years, per Spotrac.

The lack of pay compared to her male counterparts sparked outrage on the internet, even seemingly catching the attention of President Joe Biden.

“Women in sports continue to push new boundaries and inspire us all. But right now we’re seeing that even if you’re the best, women are not paid their fair share,” Biden wrote. “It’s time that we give our daughters the same opportunities as our sons and ensure women are paid what they deserve.”

The post amassed over 10 million views on X (formerly Twitter).

According to data from numerous sources, the average NBA salary for the 2023-24 season was in the realm of $10 million. Meanwhile, the WNBA’s average is presumed to be less than $200,000 per year. The tremendous difference in pay factors in numerous components , but perhaps none bigger than viewership. Specifically for basketball, men tend to amass a much larger number of views than women, but the tide has been shifting in recent months.

According to ESPN, the NCAA Division 1 game between the LSU Tigers and Hawkeyes scored as the most-watched women’s college basketball game on record with a peak of 16.1 million viewers. Not to mention, they added the matchup was the most-watched college basketball game ever on their platforms.

Despite Clark’s underwhelming WNBA salary, she is having no trouble finding contracts as one of the faces of women’s basketball. News broke earlier this week that Nike is nearing an agreement with Clark on an endorsement deal, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. The contract is expected to be worth eight figures and include a signature shoe.

Charania spoke about the deal on a recent episode of ‘Up & Adams’: “I’m told it’s well beyond $10 million… I think it’s fair to say that it’s above $20 million. Now, how above? We’ll see when we get the final numbers, I’m not one to speculate.”
