Rep. Massie SLAMS Self-Proclaimed ‘Wartime Speaker’ Mike Johnson: ‘Get a Grip, We Are Not at War’

by | Apr 17, 2024 | News

According to a recent report from Mediaite, Speaker Mike Johnson, during a press briefing, described his leadership role as akin to being a “wartime speaker,” suggesting that the challenges he faces are comparable to those during the Civil War.

As the House prepares to vote on additional military aid for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan, Johnson faces significant opposition from America First factions within his party. He emphasized the need for “steady leadership” in these tumultuous times, citing the complexities of his role and referencing a statement by former Speaker Newt Gingrich, who likened the current political challenges to those of the Civil War, potentially even worse.

Amidst this backdrop, Rep. Thomas Massie openly criticized Johnson’s leadership, particularly his support for increased foreign aid and spending bills.

Massie has gone so far as to cosponsor a Motion to Vacate the chair, urging Johnson to resign preemptively to allow for a smooth transition without a break in Republican leadership. Despite the internal party conflict, reports from CNN suggest that Democrats might back Johnson to maintain his position if a move to oust him gains traction among hardline Republicans.
