Say it Ain’t So! Joey Chestnut Banned From 2024 Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

by | Jun 12, 2024 | News

Competitive eater Joey Chestnut, who has won the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest 16 times, is banned from participating in this year’s competition.

A spokesperson from Major League Eating told ESPN that Chestnut made the choice to support a competitor of Nathan’s hot dogs, leading to a ban for the 2024 event. The company that he chose to represent is Impossible Foods (a company that makes plant-based hot dogs). This means Chestnut’s eight-year winning streak will come to a close due to the disqualification.

MLE event organizer George Shea used a basketball analogy to express the level of betrayal Chestnut showed, “It would be like Michael Jordan saying to Nike, ‘I’m going to represent Adidas, too.”

He has set numerous event records, including eating 76 hot dogs in the 2021 edition. He downed more than 60 in last year’s competition, enough to defeat runner-up Geoffrey Esper, who devoured 49 hot dogs and buns.

The Major League Eating concluded their address of the situation by stating what all fans of the sport are wishing for, “Joey Chestnut is an American hero,” their statement shared. “We would love nothing more than to have him at the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest, which he has dominated for years. We hope that he returns when he is not representing a rival brand.”
